How to optimise your loft space

it’s no secret that the loft is one of the most under-utilised spaces within the home. Raised Loft Boarding is a great method to make the most out of your space, it’s designed to help customers board their lofts effectively, while maintaining the correct amount of insulation and helping them to make the most of this underutilised room.

Access Your Loft

Before you can transform your loft into a practical storage space, you need to make sure you’ve got a reliable loft ladder, giving you easy access to the space. Some people make do with grabbing a ladder from the garage when they need to access their lofts, which is not only inconvenient, but can be very dangerous. It’s useful to have a good amount of loft lighting, so that you can see what you’ve got up there, and you’re not going to go falling over anything. You’ll need a bright, permanently installed light to optimise your safety – and you may find our own Loft Lights very helpful.

Board Your Loft the Right Way

Boarding your loft is critical in creating a practical storage area, it provides a strong, sturdy surface that you can use to store occasional-use items (such as Christmas decorations and suitcases), without affecting the effectiveness of the insulation. If your loft is already boarded, you’ll need to check that your insulation is meeting the government recommended depth of 270mm of uncompressed insulation underneath the boards. If you need any advice, we’re here to help!

Compressing insulation can reduce its effectiveness by 50%, which means you’ll be spending a lot more money on energy bills, especially throughout winter. Raised Loft Boarding has been designed with this in mind - it provides much needed support to lay your boards upon, preventing it from squashing the insulation underneath. This way, it increases the usability of your loft without affecting the insulation.

Optimise Your Loft Space

Adding shelving into the loft is a great way of creating a organised and functional new space. Normally, the space between trusses in the loft is left unused, the result being many homeowners have to pile cardboard boxes haphazardly in the available floor space around them. Loft shelving provides a spacious, sturdy surface which you can use to expand the amount of usable storage space in your loft, they also look great!

Not only can you add shelving to your loft, but you can have wardrobes too! Designed by LoftZone and installed by us. Storing your clothes in the loft doesn’t have to be something many of us fear doing due to space or the organisational factor. With the help of the new Loft Wardrobe, storing your clothes couldn’t be any safer or simpler. This smart, durable, fabric loft clothing storage allows for long-term clothing storage from season to season. Whether it’s summer or winter, store the opposite season’s outfits knowing they’ll be safe and ready to be worn as soon as the weather changes.

Store Your Items Effectively

You can save yourself a lot of space by choosing to store your items in containers. As the loft can be dusty and dirty, closed containers with lids are recommended. You can find these containers almost anywhere, but we’ve done the searching for you. You can purchase a set of 3 containers from Dunelm for just £20!

If you have good DIY skills and tools, you might consider making some of your own. Plastic crates can be useful in many cases, but can limit your storage options due to the awkward space provided by low ceilings. Bespoke storage that fits around your loft eliminates awkward gaps that do not accommodate anything, allowing you to maximise the space even further.

Labelling and Organising Your Items

For items you know you’re not going to use or particularly bulky items, it’s a great idea to store these on the outer edges of your storage space. Anything you think you might be retrieving sooner, such as items you may be wishing to sell, can go in boxes nearer to the loft hatch or closer to the middle of the space.
