How Much Does It Cost to Board Your Loft?

Most of us want to increase our storage space. Whether you are tripping over clutter or just looking for dedicated place to take up a new hobby, the most ideal space for storage is your loft! So let’s take a glance at the different types of loft boarding available.

There are a variety of different ways that you can board your loft, some cheaper and a lot simpler than others however this can often have certain drawbacks that aren’t very beneficial to your home.

Types of Loft Boarding

  • Laying chipboard directly on the joists. This is cheap and can be done by a highly skilled DIYer, loft boarding can be a very difficult job! This doesn’t leave room for the recommended insulation depth of 240-270mm, which is highly unrecommended as it will not allow enough airflow to prevent condensation.

  • Insulation boarding is a good alternative to laying chipboard, it is laid over the joists to make up the insulation depth, then laying chipboard over it. However, insulation boards can be very expensive and don’t solve the airflow problem that can be found in most lofts.

  • The floor level can be altered by attaching counter battens to the joists and laying the boards on top which allows enough space for the recommended depth of insulation and airflow. A raised floor system, such as the amazing LoftZone, this is an expertly fitted job that will give you a professional long-lasting finish.

A Job Well Done

Unless you are highly obsessed with DIY and completely confident in your ability to carry out the job, we would not recommend doing so. Having your loft professionally fitted by a fully insured company, (just like ourselves) is cost effective and you can be sure of a high quality finish. Our company is checkatrade approved which simply means that we maintain the highest standards of work! If you would like to learn more about raised loft boarding please contact us.

How much will it cost?

If you are going to have your loft professionally fitted, you’ll be provided a quote that includes the cost of labour and materials. The price of your installation will depend on how much boarding you need and what method you’ve chosen.

Lofts come in all shapes and sizes! We professionally install lofts daily from £500-3500 depending on your requirements and the options you choose. The average cost of our installations is £1200-2000. Check out our loft packages for an estimate of how much it may cost to transform your loft for storage.

We will always recommend that you invest in a professionally installed raised loft boarding system for your home. However, if you decide to buy boarding to do it yourself, you can get 18mm of chipboard at around £10 for a sheet of 2400m x 600mm. While insulation boards cost around £20 per sheet, you will need to purchase the chipboard as well.
